Bentonite is a clay mineral that is primarily composed of montmorillonite, which is a phyllosilicate mineral formed from volcanic ash. It is named after Fort Benton, Wyoming, where it was first discovered. Bentonite typically forms as a result of weathering and volcanic activity, where volcanic ash settles into bodies of water and undergoes chemical alteration over time.
One of the distinctive properties of bentonite is its ability to swell and absorb water. When hydrated, bentonite can expand several times its original volume, forming a gel-like substance with strong binding properties.
